Electronic Record Systems Can Improve Health Outcomes For Children In Foster Care

The Children's Partnership (TCP) has released Improving Health Outcomes for Children in Foster Care: The Role of Electronic Record Systems, an Issue Brief that describes how Electronic Record Systems (ERSs) can benefit children in foster care and the systems that serve them.


The Issue Brief summarizes how ERSs can be used to benefit the 800,000 American children who spend time in foster care each year. These children have more health care needs than other children, but account for a disproportionate share of public spending on children's health care. Children in foster care continue to experience serious unmet health care needs, which is largely due to instability in their placement combined with limited coordination and information-sharing between service providers.


Improving Health Outcomes for Children in Foster Care: The Role of Electronic Record Systems provides an overview of several states and cities that have used ERSs to improve the coordination and delivery of care for children in foster care. It highlights early evidence of the impact these efforts have had, outlines lessons-learned, and provides recommendations to policy-makers.
