On the publication of research in the British Medical Journal looking at the links between migraine and an increased risk of stroke, Ellen Mason, Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation said:
'This review clarifies that it is only migraine with aura - a migraine with temporary visual and sensory disturbances that is linked to increased risk of having a stroke.
"Women under 45 are most at risk - and their risk of stroke is doubled when suffering from migraine with aura.
"Although women of this age are considered to be at low risk of stroke, this risk may increase if they are on oral contraceptives containing oestrogens, or they smoke.
"BHF recommends reducing these risks as much possible, and those concerned are advised to switch over onto non-oestrogen based contraceptives, quit smoking or to contact their GP for further guidance.
"Although an increased risk of heart attack and death was not proven, there have been fewer studies into this, so more research in this area would be beneficial."
